How many veterans are currently running for President in 2008?
Q. I think that prior military experience is a huge plus when it comes to being the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces. I know that John McCain and Ron Paul are veterans. Are there any other veterans (that actually showed up to duty) besides those two? Yes, I am a veteran (6 years active duty Army, 2 years inactive). Someone that is not willing to fight for our country should not be able to send troops to fight for our country.

A. In addition to Senator McCain and Dr. Paul, Congressman Hunter served in Vietnam, and Senator Dodd was a member of the Army Reserves from 69 to 75. That's it. That's the list

When will the US Airforce start accepting veterans from other services?
Q. I joined the Marines right after high school and did my 4 years. I'm almost done with college and want to go in as an officer. Does anybody know when the Airforce will start accepting other service veterans or have they ever accepted other service veterans? Thanks all!
Asked by seeking knowledge - Sat Jan 26 20:52:22 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Air Force has veteran service (called Prior Service) recruiting drives as needed. Usually they are looking for certain career tracks (MOS's or NEC's). The proceedures for officer candidates would be different than enlisted, however. Your best bet would be to contact a local recruiter for OCS. Do not settle for an enlisted posistion, you spent your time in college. There are lots of great officer programs in all of the branches, the military in general is hurting for medical and intelligence officers now, if it is something you would be interested in, it might be worth pursuing letting them send you to school. Good Luck!!

How can I get involved in working with veterans as a volunteer? I am a premedical student?
Q. How can I volunteer at a veteran's rehabilitation facility? My main interest is working with combat veterans who are in physical rehabilitation. I will contact the VA here but want to know if there is a specific department I should speak to. Thanks.

A. I would speak to Human Resources. Contact the larger V.A. facilities in your area. You can call 1-800-827-1000 for the main VA services number, or go to Also, they are starting to build more CBOC clinics in smaller cities (Community Based Outpatient Clinics). Thank you for doing this! Here's for paying jobs:

How do Veterans feel after serving this country?
Q. Seeing all these kids asking about veterans and how they benefit todays youth, I was interested to read all the replies. So then I got to thinking, how a veteran feels after a accomplishment. Just curious to how you would word it. Thank you deeply from heart for serving. There isn't anything in the world we could do to give thanks to the veterans that would be enough to show how much we do respect and honor you.

Asked by Jennifer Q - Wed Feb 18 03:44:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call your regional office and ask to speak with the American Legion representative. They get answers. It is the VA's job to restrict claims; it is the American Legion's (and DAV's) job to assist the veteran in negotiating the very tough disability road at VA. Having them as my limited power of attorney made all the difference in my claim. Deal with the VA as little as possible...that is why ombudsman organizations like AL and DAV are here...to defend the veteran. This is not to denigrate the fine people who assist us at the VA every day; rather, it is to point out the difference in function of VA vs AL in the adjudication process, which is necessarily an adversarial function. Good luck.

How will the veterans of the War in Iraq get proper medical treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Q. How will our government assure that the veterans of this war will get proper medical attention for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (i.e Shell Shock)? Will the veterans of this war be ignored like far to many Vietnam Veterans did when they returned from their war? What politician running for the 2008 election has an answer for that question?

A. I went out and and ordered a flower wreath for the memorial site here in the city of the Deceased Veterans. We have a lovely Memorial that has been built for Veterans of all wars. For the past couple years I have lived here I buy a red, white and blue wreath and take it there, say a silent prayer and place it there. When I lived in VA, or if I am in CA I go to an actual VA cemetery and place flags on graves of the deceased and listen to "role call" of the unknown and fallen soldiers". Memorial Day is important, especially at a time when we are fighting so many "controversial" conflicts all around the world. Peace, Love & Happiness

what percentage of our homeless are veterans?
Q. I've heard as much as 30%. Does anyone have a source for this, or a different figure. Seems very sad that the richest and most powerful country in human history can't take care of its veterans.
Asked by holbright - Sat Apr 8 10:51:48 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have worked in the VA and volunteered as a Homeless Veterans' Advocate and can tell you the numbers vary throughout the country. In some places, the % of homeless who are veterans is high, and in others low. One problem for veterans is that we were taught to be very self sufficient during our military days and told that to seek help is a sign of weakness our enemy would prey upon. That belief translates into refusal to seek medical care when very ill to not seeking assistance for financial problems, to refusing to use services local governments have set up for homeless veterans. The federal government's response to any problems veterans have (homeless or otherwise) is to ignore the problem until it is covered in the media, then… [cont.]

A. My dad did two tours in Vietnam in a construction unit of the Marine Corps. He didn't talk about it for years with anyone other than other veterans he knew and even then not much. In the last six years or so, he's opened up more about it. He has told me and Mom several stories. Some are funny while others are pretty sad. He also got out some slide pictures he took in Vietnam and let us see them. It really makes the Vietnam Conflict come alive and become more personal when I think about my dad being involved. I think about it more now that I have seen his pics and heard his stories. One he told me was that the only kill he ever had to make was one time when he was operating a large crane. They were building a bridge and snipers… [cont.]

Why were Filipino Veterans awarded their pensions while blacks have yet to get their 40 acres and a mule?
Q. As part of President Obama's stimulus package, the Filipino veterans fo WWII are getting a one-time payment for pensions they were promised but the US for never paid them. How is this different from the 40 acres and a mule that blacks were promised for the "service" they provided during slavery? And why does the US feel obligated to make good on a promise to Filipino's and not to blacks??

I am looking at writing a book about world war 2 veterans and their stories. Where Should I start?
Q. I have a great appreciation for history and I understand that every day now there are fewer and fewer veterans left from that era to share their stories. Somebody suggested to me to try and contact them through the VA and other associations and this is ideal (although any more suggestions are welcome) but I seem to have only one problem. I am only 18 years old and I am slightly afraid that none of the veterans will take me seriously and will "censor" their stories.

Is it true that California has tuition waivers for dependents of veterans, but not for veterans themselves?
Q. I'm a veteran and would like to attend at online program at Cal State. Everything I've read (even the CA VA site) said there's a tuition waiver for certain dependents, but I can't find anything about a waiver for veterans themselves. Who wants to volunteer to help me create a websites dedicated to help veterans get a free college education?
Q. I am starting a movement in order to get veterans an free college education. If you are willing to die for your country, you should a least get a free education. It is time to end the GI bill where money is missused. It is time for us, Americans to say that we support any veterans with a honorable discharge to attend state universities for free.
Asked by iharleman67 - Sun Dec 2 14:49:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Something like this already exists in some states. For example in the state of Indiana a veteran can get a free education at a state university. Also, their children can get 124 free credit hours and fees covered by the VA. It's a good idea you have, but something like this already exists. Plus, how would a website get veterans a free college education? If you want to do something about that then lobby to your state congressmen and talk to politicians, don't set up a website, put your time and effort in to doing something that could actually make a difference like talking to these people.

How would I plan a fashion show in which parts of the proceeds goes to Charity for Homeless Veterans?
Q. I would like to plan a fashion show to donate a huge portion of the proceeds to a charity that helps homeless veterans. Even if this help one family to get into a home I would feel as though it would be a success. But I would love to know how would I go by organizing something like this? I have the budget for this event but that is pretty much it. How would I go by getting sponsors? If anyone have any experience in putting together something like this, please let me know. How can a California MFT work with Iraq veterans?
Q. I am about to become a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFT) in the Bay area, and I have a great deal of specialized training in PTSD and trauma. I see there is a great need for therapists to work with returning Iraq veterans, but it doesn't seem that the VA or other federal organizations will hire MFTs. Is there some other way I could get paid to work with these veterans?

A. Well, you could join the Army as a Chaplain Assistant in the Reserves or Guard if you want to stay local (barring deployments, of course). That is right inline with what Chaplains do. Often that can lead to a state civilian job with the Guard also.
