An official is someone who holds an office (function or mandate, regardless whether it carries an actual working space with it) in an organization or government and participates in the exercise of authority (either his own or that of his superior and/or employer, public or legally private).

A government official or functionary is an official who is involved in public administration or government, through either election, appointment, or employment. A bureaucrat is a member of the bureaucracy. An elected official is a person who is an official by virtue of an election. Officials may also be appointed ex officio (by virtue of another office, often in a specified capacity, such as presiding, advisory, secretary). Some official positions may be inherited.

A person who currently holds an office is referred to as an incumbent.

The word official as a noun has been recorded since the Middle English period, first seen in 1314. It comes from the Old French official (12th century), from the Latin officialis ("attendant to a magistrate, public official"), the noun use of the original adjective officialis ("of or belonging to duty, service, or office") from officium ("office"). The meaning "person in charge of some public work or duty" was first recorded in 1555. The adjective is first attested in English in 1533, via the Old French oficial.

The informal term officialese, the jargon of "officialdom", was first recorded in 1884.

Can anyone give me a link to an unofficial or an official free version of windows xp?
Q. By unofficial I mean like black and crystal. I just need this for my ps3 as I have linux on it and want to play pc game for which I need windows. I did buy it but I am not spending another 300 euro on it just for my ps3

A. There is no free XP, official or unofficial. You can buy it like everyone else. Anything else is illegal. If you go to file sharing sites for an illegal copy from sombody you don't know, you are just asking for trouble. It could be a faulty copy or it could come bundled with viruses or other malware, either of which could cause fatal problems to your machine. If you are dumb enuf to do that, you deserve any problems you get .

What are the specific official and unofficial goals of the War in Iraq?
Q. Please only serious answers--that means no "there are no goals! Bush is just pussy-footing around in there until Obama takes the White house." And I'd like an answer other than just democracy. Wrong Mr. Puma, I have chosen the wrong subcategory. And as I was not sure which category exactly it would go in, I figured that the one that Y!A suggested was close enough for people to figure out. I suppose, on your count, I was wrong.

A. The official goal of the US is to destroy the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the unofficial goal is to have a constructive control of its oil.

Why is it unofficial website have more info than official ones?
Q. Whether it be video games, movies, and other forms of popular culture, the "unofficial" ones are always more concise, have more information, et cetera. Is it really good for business for your website to be beaten and thus attract less views than another host's site?
Asked by fret_guy89 - Mon Jun 12 14:50:44 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Official sites have to toe the line on what information can be given, the press people for the product will decided what is a good thing to say or what information needs to be avoided. Unofficial sites can say what they like as long as it stays within the libel laws and what they say is based on fact. It still is good for business because the official sites are designed as a sales tool.
