Any stock/forex jobs out there for Sociology majors?
Q. I'm looking to get into the stock/forex markets field but I have a degree in Sociology, which equates to basically nothing in the private sector. Most, if not all, jobs in the stock/forex field for non-business type majors are in some boiler room high pressure 55+ hour a week sales position. I'm not interested in that at all. Does anyone know of any positions that might be possible for a Sociology major to get into in the forex/stock market fields? Or do I have to go back to school?

What is the difference between majoring in sociology and majoring in psychology?
Q. What job opportunities are available for both majors? Are you more likely to be hired as a social worker with a sociology major or a psychology major (provided that you have a degree)? Can you become a therapist with a master's degree and a sociology major, or do you have to have had a psychology major? What is the difference overall of these two subjects?

A. In psychology, you study the way the brain functions and how it affects the way people behave. In sociology, you study groups of people (i.e. communities) and the way they are affected by outside sources. Psychology examines more of the workings of the human mind, why persons think and behave as they do. Sociology tends to examine groups of persons (societies), communities, and nations. They might examine and discuss such things as folkways, mores, changes in populations, effects of events on entire communities, etc... So one way to look at it is that psychology is more about the individual or small group, and sociology is more about communities and larger groups of persons. A bachelor's degree is usually the minimum requirement for… [cont.]

A. I'm not a sociology major, but I'm a psych major, and that's close. I've also taken sociology classes. Sociology has a big range of job options. Generally, sociology majors attend grad school after they get their bachelor's, since a master's makes a significant difference in the job market, particularly in that area of work. A PhD is not nearly as common or necessary. After college, sociology majors specialize during their graduate years. They can go onto study and do research within that field, which usually means earning their PhD and becoming a professor. However, that option isn't that common, mostly because people don't choose it (they'd rather work with people than do research, I guess). Many sociology majors go on to work… [cont.]

Good colleges for sociology majors?
Q. Hi. I'm wondering what schools are good for me... I want to major in sociology and minor in some form of english. I can't afford something very expensive. I want to go somewhere on the upper east coast- vermont, connecticut, massachussets etc.
Asked by emando16 - Tue Nov 14 20:58:34 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, keep in mind that top liberal arts colleges (yes, the expensive ones) often provide BETTER financial aid packages than less-expensive state schools. This is because they usually have large endowments, and can support their students to a greater degree. So if you have excellent SAT scores, don't discount schools like Amherst, Smith, Wellesley, Trinity, Brown, Bowdoin, Colby, Dartmouth, etc. Second, the state schools in New England are excellent. The University of Vermont and UConn are quite good. UMass is ok.

Question for sociology majors...?
Q. I am going to be a Sophomore in college next year and I am on my way to becoming a sociology major. My question is: is it worth it and will it get me a job? I know that a masters in Soc. can transfer into many career areas but I have also heard some skepticism about the actual success of sociology majors. What has your experience been? Thank You!

A. it hasn't hurt my career most employers just want to know if you have a degree or not I have never even been asked for proof of my qualifications. I think its mostly hard science students that are sceptical. In the medical students toilet block they had written on a paper towel dispenser 'sociology degrees just take one' Its ignorance I think its pretty hard to do a subject where you dont have a right and a wrong answer - But there are many people out there hiring who did sociology or arts subjects themselves - so dont worry too much - Its just status hunters who try to put us down.

Sociology majors who went into advertising/marketing?
Q. Does anyone here with a Sociology degree (B.A. or B.S.) currently have a job in marketing or advertising? I graduate in December, and working for an advertising company sounds interesting (I guess I should have majored in advertising...). Was it difficult to get the job? What do you do?
Asked by yellowhummin217 - Thu Aug 9 16:18:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I graduated with a B.S. in Sociology last December and found myself in a similar situation. Since then I have (and currently am) interning at two PR/Advertising firms.. If this is really what you want to do, then be patient and willing to work hard for little money (at least for now). Keep yourself informed (this will show in job interviews). I also found that working at a bigger firm gives you the opportunity to work with pr, advertising, and marketing..good if you still aren't 100% that this is what you want to do.. also consider taking some certification or undergrad/ grad courses in advertising while interning..

Q. Just wondering what jobs are available for Sociology majors besides the overdrawn social worker. And more, what are jobs I can find that involve children (besides social work)?

A. Teaching would be the one that would directly link to sociology (you can get a job in a private school without often having a teaching credential). You can get a job in a recreation program or afterschool program. Americorp or service learning programs would be anotehr option. Most other jobs are in someway related to social work (e.g. prevention, intervention programs with youth, group homes, peer mentoring, big brother). DA

Sociology Majors...BEWARE!!?
Q. For those majoring in sociology, make sure that this field of study is exactly what you plan to pursure beyond the Bachelor of Arts level. A sociology B.A. has no more value than a high school diploma, my opinion. There are majors that will not help you in terms of employment UNLESS you decide to go BEYOND the undergraduate level and sociology is one of them. How do I know? I graduated with a sociology B.A. in 1994 and my degree has done absolutely NOTHING for me in terms of success and employment. I do not want anyone to experience what I have since graduating from college 14 years ago. I have a B.A. in sociology and have survived in dead-end jobs. Right now, I work as a security guard making peanuts for a living. If you want… [cont.]

A. My husband got a B.A. with a double-majored in sociology and history. He's the manager of tech support and telecommunications for a middle-sized company. He supervises a staff, manages a budget, and makes over 50% more than I do (I have a master's degree that's directly related to my job, and 25 years of experience in my field). It's all about how you sell yourself and your degree. Getting a college degree--any degree--demonstrates that you have intelligence, ambition, and discipline, and that you have the persistence and determination to finish what you started. In a sociology program you learn about human behavior and how social forces influence people and organizations. You also learn to think critically, to analyze data, to read… [cont.]

Q. are there any pratical jobs for these majors or is it a waste like communications? is law a better route into policy making?
Asked by chicago85thst - Wed Apr 12 13:14:24 2006 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Unless you get a masters or doctorate in these majors you're going to wind up as a bank teller or low level business person. At least you didn't mention psychology or art history. Those majors are mostly worthless for finding a job. Our country derides attorneys, but we certainly elect a lot of them.

Q. I'm undecided and do not absolutely have to declare a major at this very moment, but that time is coming up. Will sociology or anthropology yield better career options? Suggestions for any other majors that may be of interest?

A. Just graduate with a four-year degree and take a government civil service tests. Unless you are exceptionally bright a sociology or anthropology majors are only good for you keep up your studies and go for a Phd. and become a professor. Or you have good enough grades to get into law school. Outside of that, it's best to prepare for civil service test for social services.

A. I have my degree in Sociology but I never got a chance to use it in the job market. My husband and I were blessed with a son and I wanted to stay home. There are a variety of jobs available, but many don't pay buckets of cash in the beginning. If you want to help people and don't care about the money as much, sociology will be a very good way to go. I found this web site with job opportunities from the American Sociological Association. I copy pasted this from that site # social services--in rehabilitation, case management, group work with youth or the elderly, recreation, or administration # community work--in fund-raising for social service organizations, nonprofits, child-care or community development agencies, or environmental… [cont.]
