How hard is it to get hired in regional airlines?
Q. I'm just curious. Is it hard to get in to regional airlines as pilot? Or is it easy, like everyone can do it? Is the competition really hard among candidates who want to be a pilot in regional airlines? Or very easy??? I'm talking about recently. Please answer if you were once hired from regional airlines Thanks. I am not asking about right now. I am saying "when economy is NOT BAD"

A. Right now, any airline is tough to get into. Airlines laid off thousands of pilots within the past month or two because of the economy. Whether it's regional or not, you're going to have a hard time probably for the next 1, maybe 2 or 3 years, until the economy gets better. Lets hope gas prices don't go up again, because that would cause even more lay offs and turmoil.

What about being a regional pilot?
Q. I saw the recent question on becoming a 747 pilot. Frankly, I don't like that sound of driving something THAT immense; it takes a lot of time to do too. Also, the hassle associated with entering another country and their regulations and the long flight time. Now what I am asking is this: What are the requirements of being a regional pilot flying 737ish aircraft in regional airlines like Southwest etc? I am really considering a job in travel and a pilot sounds good. Hows the training? How long? Is it worth it? What about your family life? I would appreciate answers from regional pilots or international alike, although anyone's helpful input would also help.

A. 1) What are the requirements of being a regional pilot flying 737ish aircraft in regional airlines like Southwest etc? First off, SWA is NOT a regional. Make no mistake, they are a MAJOR U.S. carrier and one of the top paying airlines at that. Any airline that flies 737s can't really be considered a "regional". In all actuality many airlines that are called such are actually majors as they have over a billion in revenue annually (the mark of a major by the D.O.T.). The "regional" airlines like the Express & Connection carriers that feed the majors (even if they are now "majors" in their own right) generally all require: 1. A Commercial pilot certificate with instrument & multi-engine ratings 2. 1,000 hours of flight experience, 100 of… [cont.]

What is the difference between regional and direct trenitalia trains?
Q. I'm going to be taking a train from Bergamo to Milan and back at the end of the month. The fastest option shows up with a D symbol on trenitalia's website and goes into Milano Centrale. The others go into Lambrate and Porta Garibaldi. These have an R symbol. I think I've worked out that D train is direct and the R trains are regional from their website. Are there any surcharges or do you have to reserve a seat on the direct trains into Milano Centrale? The trains are all short-distance within Lombardy.

A. There are actually 4 classes of train - Regionale - slowest, least comfortable. Best to use if you are going to small village stations. They are the cheapest and get there in the end! Diretto - cuts out some of the smaller stations but not the fastest trains in the world. UK commuter standard (and every bit as reliable). Express - City-to-city and until recently the top service. More expensive than the two above but trust us, its worth it! Eurostar - luxury and very fast trains. More expensive again but worth it for longer journeys. You pay for the distance, so its not cheaper to get a return than two singles, and you don't have to get the same class of train in each direction. It is a good idea to book Eurostar or Express seats… [cont.]

What should I be charging for non regional computer repair work?
Q. I work for a computer repair organization that offers me out of regional deals with extra compensation for my time. These spots are upwards of 90 minutes away from where I live and eat a considerable amount of gas and time. I have to work out a contract with them per region. How much should I be asking for? My flat rate is $30 per local job (which are usually very easy) but for long trip that involve travel and gas, what should I be charging when working out a contract? Well it is $30 dollars flat per local area. if I am out of the local 5 mile area, I get a travel fee bonus. I'm doing a about a 2-2.5 hour job today for $50 bucks for example, to cover my gas and a little extra on the side. I feel this is a little bit low personally.… [cont.]

A. I don't know where you're living, but I used to charge $60 / hour. I had a friend who charged around $90. From what I've seen $60 - $120 / hour are within industry standards. You don't want to gouge people, but I think $30 an hour is too low, especially for jobs that involve travel. If you put a high value on your work, others will, too. If you put a low value on your work, others will, too. [edit: I would have charged about $150 for a 2.5 hour job. My friend would have charged about $225. He used to scold me for charging too little! Of course, this was in central New Jersey, near Princeton, which is a pretty heavy populated, well-off area. I never had any complaints about my rates being unreasonable. How old would I have to be to work at a small regional airport?
Q. I have always enjoyed watching airplanes. How old would I have to be to work at my small regional airport? My airport is East Texas Regional Airport.
Asked by Andy - Mon Nov 10 18:34:30 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It kind of depends. Some small FBOs really don't have a minimum age, and I've had 15 year old kids fuel my aircraft (who probably had more hours than me!). Larger airports like GGG probably have municipality oversight. There are lots of places to work there, but I would ask the airport at their site: See what they say. Don't underestimate the folks in aviation. They are usually willing to help a young person who is interested in flying, if they can. Good luck.

How do they deliver regional jets to customers?
Q. I've always wondered how they deliver regional jets to customers. Say some airline in Asia orders 20 CRJ-200s from Bombardier, which manufactures aircraft in North America. How do they deliver it to Asia? Regional-jets lack trans-oceanic range. Truck driver training: Is Regional driving job possible with some companies?
Q. I am interested in getting into truck driving. I was wondering if anyone knows of any companies, in the Dallas, Fort Worth area, that you will train you and place you with a company that does regional instead of OTR trucking for the contract period? I have a family and don't want to be gone for long, long periods of time. I would like to be home weekends. Can't afford truck driving school though but OTR really isn't a big option for me. A. There are companies that do this and you will have to search, however, being a new driver, the insurance companies for these larger companies that can afford to "try you out", mostly require that you have some type of over the road (OTR) experience. A great company to contact is Arrow Trucking Company. They're out of Tulsa, OK. They can give some info regarding places to get your CDL. What they will do is hire you for their flatbed or dry van division, (go with flatbed for the experience.). After you get your CDL, they will hire you and send you with a trainer for the first 30-60 days and when you pass they will put you can get on the list for the Dallas Regional board. Believe me when I tell you that you want OTR experience when you… [cont.]

How much is a regional hospital expense?
Q. My father recently had a mild heart attack due to cholestrol and he was rushed to Saint Elizebeth's Regional MEdical Center in Boston,MA. We dont have medical insurance and he stayed there for a check up and not at the emergency. How much would a check up be?

A. Regional hospitals vary in their costs. If you have the opportunity to go to a state or university hospital, they often have programs to assist those people that don't have medical insurance. Check with your hospital to see if they have a fund to assist people like you, without insurance. Otherwise plan on spending $250 per hour that he was there, unless he was admitted. If he was admitted overnight, it will be less per hour but higher overall. Good Luck

Does anyone know why I have to pay city taxes where I work and Regional Income Tax where I live?
Q. I am paying as much in city and regional taxes as I am in federal. I also own a home and pay property taxes. Shouldn't my city taxes taken out of my checks be transferred to where I pay RITA? It is Ohio, but I've never seen a partial credit. I've been told you don't legally have to pay Regional, but that doesn't sound right.

A. Ohio? Local taxes in Ohio are very unique. In effect, you end up paying local taxes where you work AND where you live. Your work is required to withhold taxes based on the work location but your home location only gives you partial credit for those taxes.

A. Regional metamorphism. Contact metamorphism is confined to relatively small areas near the Earth's surface. Regional metamorphism has much more variablity in pressure and temperature whereas contact metamorphism is confined to low pressures.
