The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is a family-owned and -operated business venture that sanctions and governs multiple auto racing sports events. It was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1947–48. As of 2009, the CEO for the company is Brian France, grandson of the late Bill France Sr. NASCAR is the largest sanctioning body of stock car racing in the United States. The three largest racing series sanctioned by NASCAR are the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. It also oversees NASCAR Local Racing, the Whelen Modified Tour, the Whelen All-American Series, and the NASCAR iRacing.com Series. NASCAR sanctions over 1500 races at over 100 tracks in 39 states, and Canada. NASCAR has presented exhibition races in Suzuka City, Japan, Motegi City, Japan, Mexico, and Melbourne, Australia.

NASCAR's headquarters are located in Daytona Beach, Florida, although it also maintains offices in four North Carolina cities: Charlotte, Mooresville, Concord, and Conover. Regional offices are also located in New York City, Los Angeles, Bentonville, Arkansas, and international offices in Mexico City and Toronto. Additionally, owing to its southern roots, all but a handful of NASCAR teams are still based in North Carolina, especially near Charlotte.

NASCAR is one of the most viewed professional sports in terms of television ratings in the United States. In fact, professional football is the only sport in the United States to hold more viewers than NASCAR. Internationally, NASCAR races are broadcast in over 150 countries. NASCAR holds 17 of the top 20 attended single-day sporting events in the world, and claims 75 million fans who purchase over $3 billion in annual licensed product sales. Many marketers consider NASCAR fans the most brand-loyal in all of sports and as a result, Fortune 500 companies sponsor NASCAR more than any other Motor Sport.

Does Nascar care what medication or drugs the drivers take before the race?
Q. If a driver has the flu or any other illness, he most likely will be on medication. A lot of meds cautions against driving. Nascar is so strict about rules, maybe they should check on the driver's health and medication before he is allowed on the tract. It could be dangerous for the other drivers.

A. You have a point. I think all the drivers can do when they have a cold or flu is hydrate themselves, or hydrate intervienously as Denny Hamlin do. If they are allowed to take Tylenol or Advil, or even aspirin, I think most chose not to do so. You would definitely say no to Sudefed or any kind of cold medicine with steroids or efedrine. Prescription cold or flu medicine would result in a positive drug test. Yes, NASCAR cares and the competitors care even more. It is their lives at stake.

What parts of the NASCAR car actually belongs to the manufacturers?
Q. With the body design regulated by NASCAR, the tires by Goodyear and the gas by Sunoco which parts of the car is actually designed and built by Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, or Toyota? I'm guessing it might be the engine and tranny? Any people in the know?

A. The engine blocks are about the only thing made by the manufacturer, and even they are special race-only parts. The heads, intake, and the rotating assembly are all aftermarket, or come from the individual race shop. The tranny's are aftermarket pieces made by such companies as Jericho, Brinn, Bert, or a bunch of other tranny manufacturers. The rear-ends are 9" Ford, but that's in name only. NASCAR's Cup series hasn't used a stock 9" Ford rear-end in over 25 years, or one made by Ford for that matter. For those of you saying that the stickers come from the manufacturer, you are sadly mistaken. They are done either in-house, or bought from a decal maker/vinyl graphics company, such as the one I run. I made a new set of Fusion… [cont.]

Should NASCAR add a restrictor plate track to the Sprint Cup Schedule to attract more appeal to the sport?
Q. Should NASCAR add another restrictor plate track to the Sprint Cup Schedule to attract more appeal to the sport? I feel that if they do this ratings and ticket sales would go up, and fans would get a chance to see an exciting race like at Daytona and Talladega. What would be the effects of adding another restrictor plate track (good or bad)? Also, should NASCAR get rid of the restrictor plates, even though speeds would be over 220 mph?

A. First, someone would have to build a track that could support restrictor plate racing. I don't know if any organization that could obtain that much financing. Many of the drivers are not fans of restrictor plate racing. Ticket sales are down for most of NASCAR's tracks. WWherewould they put the track in the schedule? Which track would have to relinquish one of its races? Las Vegas and Kansas both want a second race. NASCAR cannot get rid of the restrictor plates at Talladega and Daytona. The cars would be traveling too fast for the track. It would be very unsafe for the fans in the stands. The late Dale Earnhardt once said that they should move the stands back and let the drivers race unrestricted (I'm paraphrasing) at those… [cont.]
