How much greater is the chance of getting killed in US military life than in civilian life?
Q. Let's say the chance of meeting a sudden death in civilian life is 1/100. What would be the chance in US military life?

A. You are overstating your odds of getting killed in civilian life. Probably closer to 1 - 10,000 based upon your criteria) There are a total of 1,083,027 active duty military personal in the US combined forces. There have been an average of 500 combat deaths per year since we began the Afghan war in 2001. There have also been an average of 3500 non lethal casualities each year from those same conflicts. So, the odds for an average military personal dying in those conflicts are 1 - 2,000. However, since only about 25% of the military is actually involved in those wars, the odds for death for military person stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan is closer to 1- 500. Furthermore, there are sever at-risk positions where the death rate… [cont.]

For military guys, How normal is for you to share thoughts and feelings about military life with penpals?
Q. Like feelings about deployment, leaving family, marriage, and military life in general with a penpal you have. How open you are with sharing those thoughts and feelings with someone, or do you do it with very close friends and love ones only?
Asked by JT - Mon Mar 24 19:59:52 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on the person. I had five pen pals during my last tour. Over a year of talking to one of them, another year of visiting her, we got married. Overall, it depended on the person. Two were good at talking about things, one younger one was just curious about things and didn't not seem to be interesting in details, one was more interested in telling me about himself and his XBox. Something I have noticed in general over several years is that people share their feeling with two people, someone they know extremely well, or somebody they do not know at all.

How do you know if the military life is for you?
Q. my boyfriend is in the air force and we have been together for awhile. I never sat down to think of what this could mean. We could (and most likely will) end up getting married, but I will have to be worried about him being deployed or re-stationed. I have lived in the state I currently reside my whole life and my family is here as well. Has anyone been through this either you personally are in the military or your spouse is? How do you cope? well we already live together. we live off base. and i'm definitely proud of him :) and everyone else that serves & protects our wonderful country.

A. Military life is not for everyone, and being a military spouse isn't for everyone. The good news is there's a support network for you and your husband to fall back on, no matter what comes his way. Most Air Force bases have an Officers Wives Club and an Enlisted Wives Club, and if you were to marry your boyfriend you'd also meet the spouses of other military members, many of whom are in the same boat you are -- living far from home, not used to living on a military installation, etc. So you'll find a lot of people that you can identify with, and the vast majority of Air Force spouses (not to mention active duty Air Force members) are very nice, personable people. The Air Force goes a long way to make spouses feel welcome and "included"… [cont.]
