From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society. The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns. In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do military wives deal with their husbands being away so much? Q. My husband has his own business and he is always busy at work. He has been working extra hard these days because of the recession. We always get in fights before he's so busy all the time, then I wonder: how do military wives deal with it? Their husbands are away for months at a time, and overseas. Please tell me (especially if you are a military wife.) I would really appreciate it it. Thanks. Work, go to school, volunteer your time, start a new hobby etc. Each person learns to cope in their own way but the military offers lots of support groups. Answered by lconnor65 - Mon Aug 3 15:24:54 2009 Military wives: How long after the wedding did you get pregnant? Q. I just married into the Navy last month, and his friends are joking and betting on when I'll be pregnant. Yikes! We don't want to have kids for a few more years, but it seems to be a popular trend that military wives - or even newlyweds in general - are getting pregnant soon after they get married! Just would like to hear your stories:) Thanks! Asked by symphony74 - Wed Apr 25 01:53:15 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. I was in the military when I had my first two children, and now I am a military spouse and have just had my third. DO NOT rush into having children especially if your husband is in the military and could be deployed. Make sure you are OK with his work schedule and with him possibly being gone for long periods of time (at which time you become a single parent). I truly believe that too many women get pregnant too soon and then they become overwhelmed and can not handle what the military has to offer. Yes we have medical and a guaranteed paycheck and free housing if you choose it, but we don't always have a spouse. If you don't have personal experience with the military (ie you are prior military or maybe a parent was) don't rush it!!! Q. Would you be comfortable if your military would intervene in the case of a Nazist party won an overwhelming majority, and that this party had a strong track record of power abuse and bullying. What is the limit where you would approve of a military intervention in politics? Asked by AtakanK - Mon Aug 20 11:05:07 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. The armed forces constitutional job is to follow the orders of the elected government and (most important) obey the Constitution. Given the past 70 odd years of government/politicians ignoring the Constitution, the Armed Forces would be in a quandry at what point does that elected government constitute enough of a threat to revolt. The erosion of American liberty has been pretty persistant for a long time, when do we abandon the remains of our Republic to start a civil war? The personnel serving tend to better educated than the populance on average and far better versed in the Constitution and US history at large. It would have to be a major break before the military would stage a coup or whatever word you'd want to use.
