What are the guidelines for selecting ethnicity on college applications?
Q. Specifically, I am one quarter Japanese, but I have never been to Japan and had a strictly Caucasian upbringing. What would I mark as my ethnicity? Links to sources are encouraged.
Asked by ithink - Tue Dec 26 17:46:17 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can put what you feel you are, and you can put nothing if you feel the choices available do not truly portray who you are as well. The university/college cannot, by law, use your ethnicity choice to make thier decisions on your application status. Most applications have a small clause explaining this. So if you feel one of the choices will represent you best-go for it, if not then I would not worry too much about it because it is just for their general statistics.

A. Have you ever been to Spain? Most people from Northern Spain aren't what some would call Mediterranean looking. In fact, most of the people I encountered when I was in Spain were what most Americans think as typical "European" looking or blonde haired, freckled, and light eyes.

A. The American population grew at an incredible rate in the 19th century, primarily through immigration. As in all societies in this situation, the rapid influx of new people from new places produced resentment and opposition among some who were already there. Laws were proposed and in some cases passed to restrict the Irish, Italians, Chinese and other groups. Catholics were under great suspicion, as were members of more exotic religions. Slavery was such an explosive issue that it led to a war between the northern and southern states that killed more Americans than all the wars before or since. Slavery was finally abolished, but the imposition of Jim Crow laws meant the struggle for equality for African Americans had just begun. The… [cont.]

What should I put for ethnicity on my college application?
Q. I'm applying to the University of Georgia. I'm confused on what ethnicity I should choose. I am one-fourth Mexican. You would never guess that from looking at me, but that's besides the point. I can be considered both white or hispanic. My question is: What race should I choose? Minority status is supposed to help your chances of admission, but with hispanics making up only 2% of the student body at UGA and whites being 81%, I'm kinda of skeptical about it. Help? Also, does UGA give any financial aid based on race at all?

A. of course there are different classifications and categories, however, mainly: black, indian, and european. Mexico was settled by Spain, and England (in the Yucatan Peninsula), then ruled by Napoelon III of France, and the Habsbourgs of Austria. There have also been large influxes of immigration to Mexico, for example, when the Irish were persecuted in the USA during the redscare, many of them immigrated to Mexico (Vicente Fox is of Irish descent). Also during WWI and II many jews immigrated to latinamerica when USA closed it's borders for Jews to immigrate into the country, Frida Kahlo is an example, her father was a German Jew who immigrated to Mexico. Why are people caring more about Obama ethnicity, but instead whats important?
Q. For God Sake why do you care so much about Obama ethnicity, when you should be worrying about who's going to be the next president. People should be reading about his education history, things he have contributed to, not if he is Muslim, Black, or White. It dont matter, because its not going to when you vote for who's going to be a better leader educationally, and who have better contributions to our nation unity.

A. There isn't a specific feminist ideology of ethnicity and nationalism, but as part of the social sciences, they do tend to use a constructivist epistemology to explain them. So for example, there is no biological basis for race, or the supposed superiority / inferiority of certain ethnicities, so any stereotypes are merely human / social constructions based on appearance, rather than any real differences between the 'races', and I guess the same would go for different nationalities (and their perceived characteristics). Of course, liberal feminism and socialist feminism would differ depending on whether you were looking for an objective or subjective (ontological) understanding of race / nationalism - ie, a person may not be… [cont.]

How strongly is body fat related to ethnicity?
Q. I have read studies where they show that certain ethicities are predisposed to higher levels of body fat. Is that true? If so, how hard would it be for say a Chinese or Indian or Mexican or Arab in his late 20s to reduce body fat compared to a black or white person? It would be great if people post their ethnicity and their body fat percentage -- especially those who have managed to reduce it.
Asked by Apeman - Sat Dec 2 23:10:24 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is an interesting question. Not only might body fat be something that is pre-determined by ethnic background, so is bone structure. Blacks tend to have heavier bones as do Irish while the more fair-skinned blonds of Scandinavia having lighter bones and the orientals having the lightest bones. This contributes to differences in BMI as well as who tends to be better in what sports, who is more apt to suffer from osteoporosis, etc. The whole point is for each person to be the healthiest that they can within their own body type. If one is destined to be pear-shaped, the best they can hope for is to be a toned, smaller pear shape and so forth. You really cannot totally change your body shape. At best, you can create the best toned… [cont.]

A. No you can't tell by physical appearance. If they speak you can tell by what language or accent they may have. Thousands of years of migrations and occasional wars (which cause forced migration.) have pretty much mixed the genes and there is no guarantee that any assumption of a physical trait would be correct. -- speaking of generalities skin tones darker in the south and lighter in the north.

A. Nationality:- Nationality is a relationship between a person and their state of origin, culture, association, affiliation and/or loyalty. Nationality affords the state jurisdiction over the person, and affords the person the protection of the state. Ethnicity:- An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, and who are regarded as distinctive by those outside the group, turning the group into a "people." Ethnic groups are united by common cultural, behavioral, linguistic, ritualistic, or religious traits, usually but not always on the basis of a common genealogy or ancestry.

Q. Is ethnicity just one of the elements in culture? And does race constitute just the physical aspects of a person's ethnicity?
Asked by unknown - Fri Jul 11 09:24:40 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ethinicity literally means a group of people who share a common origin, culture or language.whereas culture means the arts or the customs of a nation or a group. it is generally meant as a whole. culture relates to what a group of people "practise" and ethinicity relates the "group" that follows same practises. there is only a very slight difference. you can say that culture is an element in ethinicity. ehinic pals not only have same culture but also same origin, language as said above. and yes race particularly constitutes physical aspects. they are also determined from the origin of the person, like "tribal race " if the person is from africa.
