What ethnicity should I fill out that would look best on a college application?
Q. I'm half Puerto Rican, Half Mediterranian, and a tiny bit Caribbean Indian mixed somewhere in there. I want to get a grant for my ethnicity since I am not white. My dad said it would look best to just put hispanic. Is that true? Or would it look even BETTER if I included the other 2 parts of my nationality? I do know what tribe I'm from.
Asked by Guts For Breakfast - Sun May 23 13:33:20 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Mediterranean = Caucasian. You won't get anything for that. You should definitely put Hispanic ethnicity; you can put Native American in too, but they might ask you what specific tribe you are affiliated with and such so see if you can figure that out. Races and ethnicities that are considered "under-represented" in college admissions include: African, African-American, Hispanic, Native American, sometimes Pacific Islander. Caucasian nets you nothing, being East or South Asian in most cases actually makes you over-represented and puts you at a disadvantage in admissions. I'm not sure if you would necessarily get GRANTS just because you are a minority student, but you will be eligible to apply to good scholarships independent of… [cont.]

Q. I like this girl, and I'm trying to figure out what ethnicity she is. She looks completely Irish, but she speaks fluent Spanish and has a Spanish accent. I guess she could be from Spain or Puerto Rico?
Asked by Stephen Riach - Sat Dec 13 16:25:06 2008 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Have you ever been to Spain? Most people from Northern Spain aren't what some would call Mediterranean looking. In fact, most of the people I encountered when I was in Spain were what most Americans think as typical "European" looking or blonde haired, freckled, and light eyes.

What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
Q. I have looked at past questions and answers on this subject but I am still confused. Can someone please explain to me what is my race and ethnicity? I am Hispanic as far as my parents and my skin color. But I was born in the US and raised speaking only English.

A. As far as I've read, there are only 3 races (Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid). There are many ethnicities. For example, my race is Caucasian, and my ethnic background is Ecuadorian, French-Canadian, and British. YA is being stupid and censored me, even though I am NOT trying to insult anyone...ugh.

A. The American population grew at an incredible rate in the 19th century, primarily through immigration. As in all societies in this situation, the rapid influx of new people from new places produced resentment and opposition among some who were already there. Laws were proposed and in some cases passed to restrict the Irish, Italians, Chinese and other groups. Catholics were under great suspicion, as were members of more exotic religions. Why do people of different ethnicity tend to act stereotypically?
Q. Why is it that some (not all) people of the same ethnicity act in the same general matter? I'm not trying to be racist or anything but its just a question that I've been thinking about lately.
Asked by Kal - Mon Dec 28 05:05:38 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Because stereotypes are based on truth in some way. A stereotype is just an observation of certain people, but it's commonly seen as bad. I am white, and I can't dance very well. It also happends to be a stereotype that white people can't dance. It's not being racist really, but it's been observed that white people can't dance.

What is the difference between ethnicity and race?
Q. Ethnicity and race are often used together which makes me feel they have different meanings. I used a dictionary website and i found that they have almost the same definition, so why do they always come together if they have the same meaning?

A. Ethnicity is a culturual phenomenon, while race is a biological and anthropological phenomenon. The ethnicity that you identify yourself can change over the course of yor life, but your racial composition cannot. "Ethnicity" means membership with a group of people who share similar customs and traditions. For example, if an Ethiopian man moves to Germany and gains citizenship; then his/her nationality is German, but his/her ethnicity is still Ethiopian. However, if he/she decides to abandon his Ethiopian heritage and assimilate into German society (speak the German language, adopt German style of dress, observe German customs and traditions, etc), he/she can make a legitimate claim that he/she is of German ethnicity. His/her race, on… [cont.]

A. I dont have the exact answer. But you might want to look at this... Ram Swarup (1920 - 1998) was an independent Hindu philosopher and author. He wrote a book Ram Swarup: Logic behind Perversion of Caste , Indian Express, 13-9-1996. Since he was so against the caste system Im guessing the book will probably mention what his caste and ethnicity is that he fought so hard against.

Q. For God Sake why do you care so much about Obama ethnicity, when you should be worrying about who's going to be the next president. People should be reading about his education history, things he have contributed to, not if he is Muslim, Black, or White. Y is passed from father to son. Mitochondrial is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children. Autosomal which is what most of your DNA is. You have 46 chromosmes, 23 from each parent, 44 of the 46 are made up of Autosomal DNA. You get Autosomal 50-50 from both parents and therefore 50% from your paternal grandparents and 50% from your maternal grandparents but what you inherited from grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family will not be an even mix. Therefore you do not get 25% from… [cont.]

Q. I just applied for a position with Sears Portrait Studio online and was a bit taken aback when I was asked to provide my ethnicity?! Isn't that illegal?
