How to support adoptive child in reunion with biological mother?
Q. My son (age 21) has found his biological mother. We want to support him in this, but he seems to have shut us out. He will not share any information with us and communication with him seems to be cut off as well, unless we initiate it. I understand his need to know, but we are feeling shut out. I don't know how to support him if he won't communicate with us. I don't want to pressure him about this, because I don't exactly know how he is feeling about it. He has decided to spend a few months with her. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A. I just want to stand up and applaud you for supporting you son. Wow. this is a new question on this board. I wish that my adoptive parents had your attitude. Reunion is such an emotional roller coaster. I can't even begin to explain what it feels like. At the beginning it is very hard not to feel like you are leading a double life. I felt like I suddenly was cloned and one of me was with my adopted family, and one of me with my first family. Both people were real but separate. I felt sometimes like I could only deal with one self at a time and so would shut out people close to me while I went forward in my reunion. How to stop receiving court ordered child support?
Q. I earn well over enough to support myself and my child. I wanted to stop receiving child support (my child is still a minor) would I need to go to court for that or just call the child support office? Senior answers only please.

A. Here's what I would do, as the dad in a similar situation. My ex decided to just take me to court and rake me over the coals, even though I paid my child support. She just wanted to teach me a lesson, as to who was in charge. I would tell your ex first that if the payment doesn't come regularly, you are going to Child Support Services, and they will extract the money from your check. Give him the chance to man up and do it. If he is a jerk and doesn't pay still, contact your local government offices that deal with child support issues. Try to both be good parents. I am sure you are. But treat each other with some respect. You hurt him and he has hurt you. Play nice for your kids. I wish my ex had felt that way.
