A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society. The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns. In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I guess that this varies from MOS, but I was reading some question that people posted and one of them was about military and someone wrote that the military usually doesn't work 40 a week. He was comparing the military life to the civilian. Is this true? And if so, how many hours do military active member work per week? Asked by SPC - Tue Apr 7 17:10:41 2009 - - 16 Answers - 2 Comments A. LOL...military doesnt work 40 hours a week... no... they work LONGER. 6:30-7:30 PT 0900-1700 duty hours 9 hour days IF youre lucky because most units keep you until between 1800 and 1900... and if youre ramping up for deployment or youre out in the field then you are working twice that. Also take into consideration the 12-24 hour duties such as CQ and Staff Duty... Also take into consideration those that dont work regular duty hours such as Firefighters and Military Police... who often work 12 hour shifts...not including PT, weapons draw, guard mount, and paperwork. And lets not forget the actual deployments... where you could be out in the middle of nowhere on a mission for weeks at a time and the only sleep you get is 30 minutes… [cont.] Answered by Stevie - Tue Apr 7 17:21:29 2009 How do military wives deal with their husbands being away so much? Q. My husband has his own business and he is always busy at work. He has been working extra hard these days because of the recession. We always get in fights before he's so busy all the time, then I wonder: how do military wives deal with it? Their husbands are away for months at a time, and overseas. Please tell me (especially if you are a military wife.) I would really appreciate it it. Thanks. Asked by Trix Is My Kryptonite - Mon Aug 3 15:19:56 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. You realize it will happen. You have to stay busy. Work, go to school, volunteer your time, start a new hobby etc. Each person learns to cope in their own way but the military offers lots of support groups. Q. It is a website that puts all your information together from all training you did in the military and it turns them into college credits. Asked by Erico - Mon Aug 18 01:10:23 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. The Navy and Marines use SMARTS. They compile a transcript of all military and civilian schooling and you take it to whatever college you are planning on attending and have them tranfer whatever credits you have for the degree you are pursuing. There are several colleges that provide distance learning for the military. https://www.navycollege.n avy.mil/faqs.html Answered by J T - Mon Aug 18 01:15:43 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Military" This page is for quotations related to the armed forces and military matters.
