A. There will without doubt be a war diary for the unit, it is a legal reuirement even today on operations all British Army Units have to maintain a war diary. The best place to try is the Artillery museum at Woolwich or the Imperial war Museum.

Royal Artillery Driver Albert Goodman 1914-1920 North Staffs?
Q. Fought in France and Gallopi trying to find all records about him as being my grandfather. He was from Stoke on Trent Hanley area.

A. Most of the records of the 6-7 million Britons who served in the ranks during the Great War were destroyed by German bombing in 1940. Some 2 million records were salvaged or preserved because they had been housed at the pension office. The Campaign Medal Rolls, which include some cursory details about most (~5 million) veterans, also survive. Key identifying facts include the year and place of his birth, the unit with which he served, the dates of his service, and his exact name. You might begin by verifying the information that you've posted. Did he serve in more than one unit? Only the 7th Battalion of the North… [cont.]

Royal Artillery- do you have any insight to offer?
Q. As you may have gathered from previous questions, I am considering a career in the British Army as an Officer. Originally I was considering aiming for the Parachute Regiment, as I enjoy my fitness work and love spending time outdoors. However I have done a little research into the Royal Artillery and this Regiment also appeals to me- it seems to have a wider range of operational ability (amphibious, airborne, forward command etc) than the paras but retains it's status as a combat regiment, which I presume means lots of hard work and time spent outdoors. Any advice on this would be welcome; what sort of reputation does the R.A have, and what- in your own words- is their role in modern warfare? Do you think it's a good choice of Regiment… [cont.]

A. the RA is one of the best Regiments in the British Army because it has so many different jobs available, you can be a gunner , OP assistant, UAV operator, Horse guards the list is goes on, plus the Royal artillery is a combat regiment and gunners go out on patrol with the infantry, when there is no need for artillery, they pick up assault rifles and fight, every gunner learns how to drive, in phase 2 training, which is a bonus, you also may have the chance to apply to become a Special Observer in 473 Battery which are a reconnaissance unit which gives coordinates to attack helis, planes, mortars, artillery, naval guns etc, and work behind enemy lines the RA is a very good regiment to join if you want to work with big guns remember with… [cont.]
