In North American English military is common as a noun -one can talk about "a military" or "the military"- but in British and Commonwealth English it is normally used as an adjective -one refers to "a military force" or "military organization".

Is it important to have a military background to be a President?
Q. I found it interesting because most people want to vote McCain because he has a military background since he was a POW. But does it really matter to have a President who has a military background? If so why? Don't they have military advisers to advise him anyway? Personally, I think it is better that the President does not have any military background because then he/she can see the picture as a whole and he/she can analyze them in every different angle, not just in the military tactics only. But i would love to hear what you think.

A. NO, But lets see McCains experience? Crashed 5 planes! Came in at the bottom of his class! Made 13 tapes for the Vietnamese against the USA! I think I'll go with Obama!

How do graduate programs at military colleges work?
Q. I'm looking for a graduate program in military history, and all the best ones seem to be at military institutions (obviously). If attend a military college for a graduate program, do I have to join the military, or can I just go for the degree? I must also specify that I would prefer to not do an online program or degree

A. The military has graduate schools as well like the Naval Postgraduate School. These institutions are not available for general enrollment. You must either be in the military and be assigned there as a student, some US government civilians can apply as well depending on the program, or you have to be a foreign military officer/government worker and apply through the US s foreign military assistance. I am at NPS now in an engineering program. It is second rate and the people I know in the international relations program it is called national security studies are also going through a second rate program. Private college graduate programs in the US are far superior.

Can a US Greencard holder with prior foreign military service join the US military?
Q. I am a greencard holder from the UK with Reserve military service there. I have been told previously that I can join and some have told me I cannot. Can someone shed some light on this for me?
Asked by Lou168 - Thu Apr 9 12:34:52 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure. Here is your Light. In your case as a US Green Card holder, you can join/enlist on any branch either the US Army, US Marines, and/or US Navy as long as you are a legal resident of the US. Not sure if they lifted the requirements on the US Airforce, on the US Airforce they only allow US Citizens (used to be not sure now). The big difference of being a green card holder vs US citizen is that you cannot join the military as an Officer because they require US citizenship. You can join the US Military as an enlisted. Also, it does not matter if you have a UK reserve experience because that doesn't count for your promotion but it will help you understand the military way of life.

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".
